The C49 was designed in response to the demand for a quieter and more efficient fan.

The FrostBoss C49 incorporates all the features of the 2010 FrostBoss. These are the same cabinet design, gearboxes, Auto controller, ambient wind shut off, wireless temperature probes, and an optional Caterpillar or Perkins engine. The difference between the FrostBoss C49 and the FrostBoss A24 is the fan assembly

The design team of practical technicians from New Zealand Frostfans, the design skills of aerodynamics engineer, Richard Karn, combined with material design engineers High Modulus Consultants and the composite blade building skills of Compotec, have produced a state of the art fan blade assembly. The advantages of composite technology were utilised to produce the most efficient three dimensional shape to blow more air using less energy and creating less noise.

Four blade fans were first developed 10 years ago in response to the need to produce a quieter fan. The four blade fan, by virtue of its greater blade area, allows a larger pitch angle to be used. This allows the fan to run at a slower speed, thus making less noise, but doing the same work. The C49 is the latest evolution of the 4 blade fan. It has a blade profile that is twisted from the tip to the root in a progressive manner, which allows the fan to produce a uniform wind right across the fan diameter. All the other 2 blade fans are twisted linearly, so the inboard ends of the blades are creating very little wind speed. The increasing width of the fan profile towards the root, combined with progressive pitch, gives the C49 blade a distinctive 3 dimensional shape.

The C49 is designed to run at 1800rpm with an operating range of 1700 rpm to 1900 rpm if more or less coverage is required. The coverage of a C49 running at 1800rpm is approx 6 – 8 ha depending on the local climatic conditions.

The noise produced by the C49 is approx 6dBA less than the A24 and less again that many other 2-blades. The C49 can be retrofitted to most brands of frost fans. The only thing that needs to be changed is the engine speed, which the service technician would do when changing the fan
